New Reks Interview

Sixshot.Com: Reks, this album is getting rave reviews. People are saying “Grey Hairs” is the best album of the year. How does this feel?

Reks: Yeah, it’s crazy man. It’s a dope feeling and I really appreciate it. Statik and me put a lot of time into putting this album together. We were really focused and it’s just incredible to be getting the response that we’re getting.

Sixshot.Com: What’s it like working with DJ Premier, possibly the greatest hip-hop producer of all time?

Reks: The greatest of all time definitely. It’s indescribable and unexplainable. He’s the most humble cat I ever met at that stature. It’s great to be able to rub elbows with someone of his iconic stature. To be able to say that he respected me enough to want to work with me is an honor in itself. All I could do is try to do his music justice. It’s a great opportunity and one that I’ll never forget.

Sixshot.Com: What’s the meaning behind the title, “Grey Hairs”?

Reks: When you look at the state of hip-hop today and the hip-hop we grew up on I actually aged myself. I’m 30 years old. I kind of speak for the youth but I’m not within their circle. There was a time when hip-hop was new and fresh and then it began to age and develop new trends and styles. Right now I feel that there’s a decision to be made. We could either continue on the path that we’re on which I feel will lead to the destruction of hip-hop or we can try and bring it back and make it so it’s new, fresh, and exciting again. Grey Hairs is like a turning point. When you get those grey hairs there is usually a decision to be made.

Sixshot.Com: So you think if hip-hop keeps going the way it’s going then it’s a wrap?

Reks: Hip-hop is a culture so it’s hard to say that the whole culture will be a wrap because it’s so huge and expands so far but in it’s purest form it will be a wrap. We’ll never see it again. People shying away from corporate decisions and making pure hip-hop will be gone. It’s definitely changed and to save it then it has to be changed. Nas made an excellent album. You got people on one end who might think it’s terrible and you got people on the other end who think it’s great but either way it’s important and I think it’s amazing that an artists of Nas’ status made an album of that caliber. That’s what we all need to be doing.

Sixshot.Com: So you liked Nas’ album then?

Reks: I loved it. Like isn’t a strong enough word. I loved the album. Not only does the album speak to people who grew up on and also want that real hip-hop back but also to people who are in dire need of messages. It’s for people who need inspiration and it’s an outcry to the youth. That album is a necessary tool to wake up the youth.
