New Chamillionaire Interview: Speaks On Mixtapes, Hip Hop, Next Album

WORDOFSOUTH.COM: We’re going to get into Pimp C and Houston in a little bit. I want to ask a few more questions regarding “Mixtape Messiah 4” as it is the focus right now. Who do you feel this new installment in the series holds up against the other three?

Chamillionaire: I definitely think “Mixtape Messiah 1” was the best; that’s just me being honest. When it came out, it was such a shock value in it that people were just eating it up and at that time I was more of an underdog than I am now. Right now I am not as much as an underdog, people know I’ve had success. But back then, there were a lot of underground fans that were rooting for me; it was big. When that came out, it just started flying everywhere; everybody was talking about it everywhere I was going. That was like a critical time in Texas underground history. Me and Mike Jones kind of had a problem but that will always be kind of legendary or classic to people out here but I’ve kind of moved passed that.

WORDOFSOUTH.COM: All of a sudden you had a bunch of new dances out there that were very similar to Soulja Boy and what he was doing.

Chamillionaire: And then you start seeing overkill. Back in the days, everybody tried to get one up on each other and try to think of something more creative. You had Slick Rick who had his own style, you had the Wu-Tang who had their own style, you had UGK who had their own style and now it’s kind of like everybody is copying the same thing a little bit.

WORDOFSOUTH.COM: How would you say this mixtape series has helped you reach this point in your career?

Chamillionaire: It’s definitely kept me a good core audience. The core audience kind of eats this stuff up. I need those fans. You can get a hit single and those fans kind of come with each single – if you have another hit single, they’ll come back. It’s the core fans that stick with you whether you’re on the radio or not. These are people that go to the stores and buy the mixtapes that you put out and actually argue with people online about you being the best – I need those fans so I try to feed them.

WORDOFSOUTH.COM: So we’re getting “Mixtape Messiah 5” in November?

Chamillionaire: Yeah “Mixtape Messiah 5” will drop in November before the album. You know I am going to have a lot of information on there that people need to know. It’s got some stuff that I might have let off of this one (Mixtape Messiah 4). I am going to kind of touch up a little bit and say it in a better way; put it out on Mixtape number five and it will be a big promotion for the album.
